Pregnancy Week 8: What Your Baby Looks Like and What to Expect

Pregnancy week 8 is an important stage in early development. Your baby is growing rapidly and beginning to look more like a tiny human.

Many women also continue to experience stronger pregnancy symptoms during this week as hormone levels continue to rise. Although your baby is still very small, major developments are happening inside your body.

By week 8, many of the structures that will eventually become your baby’s organs are already forming. This stage of pregnancy is a critical time for development, and your body is working constantly to support your baby’s growth.

Understanding what is happening during week 8 can help you feel more prepared as your pregnancy continues.

Baby Development at Week 8

At eight weeks pregnant, your baby is about the size of a raspberry. Even though the baby is still very small, significant development is happening.

Your baby’s facial features are beginning to form. The eyes, ears, and nose are becoming more defined, and tiny eyelids are starting to develop. Although the eyelids will remain closed for several more weeks, they are an important part of the baby’s developing facial structure.

Small fingers and toes are also beginning to appear, although they are still connected by thin webbing. As the weeks progress, these fingers and toes will separate and become more distinct.

The baby’s brain continues to develop quickly, and the nervous system is becoming more complex. This development allows the brain to begin coordinating early movements and signals throughout the body.

Bones are also beginning to form, replacing the earlier cartilage structures that were present in earlier stages of development. As the skeleton grows stronger, the baby’s arms and legs will continue becoming more defined.

Although you cannot feel it yet, your baby may already be making small movements inside the womb.

Hormonal changes during week 8 can cause several noticeable symptoms.

While these symptoms can feel challenging, they are typically a normal part of early pregnancy and often improve as you move closer to the second trimester.

Changes in Your Body

During week 8, your uterus continues expanding to support your growing baby. Although your baby bump may not yet be visible, important internal changes are taking place.

Hormone levels remain high as your body continues building the placenta, which will provide nutrients and oxygen to your baby throughout pregnancy.

Blood circulation is also increasing. This increased blood flow helps deliver important nutrients to your developing baby.
